Our trip to Avebury brought us to the source of the River Kennet - and this strange collection of new-age tat...
This place reminds me a lot of St. Brigit's Well in Ireland - just a lot of stuff left as votive offerings, rotting away in the open. The River Kennet, in ancient times regarded as a symbol the source of life, is tiny stream, running between Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow. Both sites both of which attract a fair bit of new-agey traffic, so it's no surprise that there would be some kind of neo-pagan shrine nearby. The objects themselves are quite odd. A pumpkin, several pentagrams made from twigs. A Tibetan-style prayer flag, and a little knick-knack which reads 'Create the life you love'. There's a mouldy venetian mask hanging from a treet. Most bizarre is the slip of fabric fastened to a tree trunk, reading 'fear, shame, guilt, attachment, depression' - and lots of other nasty things.
Incidentally, the word 'kennet' has been connected with the word 'cunt':More on Kennet/Cunt »
